Summer in the Rockies, Donovan Pavilion Wedding
I love mountain weddings and Sherry and John’s was at a favorite venue of mine, the Donovan Pavilion in Vail. This laid back couple travels to Vail regularly from their home in Kansas. Even though they don’t live in Colorado, they are season pass holders. Ski-holics! They fell in love with the area, early on, and knew they wanted to get married in the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Sherry and John are my kind of couple: easy going, authentic and live fully present in the moment.
MOUNTAIN WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
Before the ceremony, the wedding party boarded the gondola to the top of the mountain for portraits. Having a small bridal party, just maid of honor and best man, made it easy to hit some of the mountain top hot spots. First stop – the Vail wedding deck. There’s nothing like a mountain view to take your breath away! This is one of many reasons I LOVE mountain weddings. Using the mountain peak’s natural beauty, as a backdrop, is a winner every time. The couples bright, colorful wedding color palette of purples, blues and yellows were set off beautifully by the greens of the trees and the earth-tones of the creek. It’s important to capture the raw emotion and beauty of the day and I hope that is evident in the photography.
MOUNTAIN WEDDING RECEPTION
When the couple returned to the pavilion to prepare for the ceremony, the Donovan Pavilion had been transformed. A cute white picket fence sign welcomed about 125 guests as they arrived and were seated outside on the back patio deck. A few guests even brought along the welcome bag they had received the night before, a custom printed tote with the slogan, “The Adventure Begins” that included goodies, summer activity guide and a Vail trail map.
After the ceremony and family photos, the reception began. Can you say, Par-tay! The pavilion was “beaming” with warm lighting, gorgeous florals and a creative floor plan that made the gathering feel cozy and inviting. They also gave guests a lovely unique wedding favor: small, wooden boxes painted with white trees similar to couple’s ring box. Who doesn’t love a beautiful party favor that you can take home and actually use??
The night was carefree, joyful and a perfect example of a laid-back mountain wedding to remember…

This Vail wedding looks spectacular!!! I especially love the shots of the bride and groom on top of the mountain – totally reminds me of the Sound of Music! The details you captured are fabulous and those shoes!!!!
Gorgeous shots! I love how you do the close up shots to show the details of everything. First photo of flowers really caught my eyes because it shows so much of details which I love. Great job! 🙂
WOW! Can we just talk about the views from this location? Absolutely gorgeous images! I really admire your detailed shots and the bride and groom portraits.
The top of Vail mountain where the wedding deck is always makes for incredible bride and groom portraits. You simply can’t go wrong with a gondola ride up to these types of sweeping mountain views. Thanks for the kind words.
I absolutely love the blue shoes with the white gown.
Beautiful floral decorations too!
Thank you. Have you been to Vail? The scenery is epic even without any decor help but I also loved this couple’s choices in floral colors and styling. It just made this summer wedding pop like crazy. Particularly the yellow. Who doesn’t love yellow in the summertime.
What a beautiful day! This couple are just made for each other. The Donovan Pavilion looks like an amazing venue for a relaxed and fun wedding. I love how you have told their story.

I’ve never been up to the Vail Wedding Deck, but have always wanted to! Your pictures up top were STUNNING. I’ve shot at that same pavilion and it was just gorgeous. What a sweet day it was for these two, and they’re so lucky to have you as their Vail Wedding Photographer
